FOURTH BATTALION

THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN REGIMENT

ASSOCIATION QLD

HOME PAGE OF THE

FOURTH BATTALION, THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN REGIMENT (4RAR) ASSOCIATION OF AUSTRALIA (Qld)

The state associations of the Fourth Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (4RAR) by choice, do not have a National Executive. State 4RAR Associations operate as separate but affiliated associations for the common cause.

This web site is the contact and information point for all state based affiliated associations of the Fourth Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment.

4RAR has had many roles and titles since it was raised at Woodside in 1964 as an Infantry battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment. Each role has been defined in the title and is reflective of the task or the composite makeup of the Battalion in every campaign that it has been asked to serve Australia.

From 1964 to 1968 it was designated 4RAR with the role of a Light (air portable) battalion.

During its service in South Vietnam in 1968 to 1969 and again from 1971 to 1972, it was designated 4RAR/NZ (ANZAC) because of the welcome attachment of V and W Companies of the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment.

In August 1973, 4RAR linked with 2RAR to form 2/4 RAR so in effect, 4RAR and 2RAR did not formally exist as separate entities until the de-linking of the two battalions in February 1995.

The Battalion was again called 4RAR and designated a ‘Light’ battalion until in February 1997, its role was changed to Commando and it was given the official title of 4RAR (Commando), meaning that the Battalion is still a battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment but that it has a defined role of operating as a Commando battalion within Special Forces Command.

The term 4RAR as used in all state associations titles, refers to 4RAR in all its descriptions and roles.

The NSW Association by resolution of its members, is titled the 4RAR/4RAR (Cdo) Association.

No matter the terminology used, we are all immensely proud to be able to state to the world that “I served in 4RAR”.
